A 23-year-old man in Nsanje has died after committing suicide by taking a suspected poisonous substance.
The deceased identified as Samuel Maya is from Mbeta Village in Traditional Authority Malemia in Nsanje District.
The incident which took place on Thursday August 13 2020 at Mbeta Village was reported to police by the deceased’s brother, MacMillan Dakamau.
It is alleged that on Wednesday August 12 2020, the deceased was approached by police officers from victim support unit on allegation that he married a minor, hence he was taken to Nsanje Police victim support unit where he was counselled and advised to come on the following day of Thursday August 13 3020 for further counselling in the presence of his parents.
At about 2200hours, the deceased took the poisonous substance stuff suspected to be used for killing bedbags and drink.
It was his grandparent who noted about the development and immediately took him to Nsanje District Hospital where he was admitted and died on Thursday August 13 2020 while receiving treatment.
Postmortem examination established that death was caused due to poison and no foul play suspected.
In a related development, two people are feared dead in Nsanje after the boat they were sailing in capsized on Thursday August 13 2020 at Nkotamo Shire River Crossing Point.
The two have been identified as 12-year-old Peter Malitinyu and Sophia Malitinyu, both from Nkotamo Village in Traditional Authority Malemia in Nsanje District.
It is reported that on Thursday August 13 2020, the owner of the boat Rolent Mtambira from Lambwe Village in Traditional Authority Malemia in Nsanje was crossing the river using his wooden boat with fifteen passengers on board.
On their way, the hippopotamus kicked the boat leading the boat to capsize and all the passengers drowned in the waters of Shire River.
Some of the passengers managed to swim except the two who are still missing and feared dead.
Meanwhile, police have mounted a search for the missing people.
