AN OPEN LETTER TO MOZAMBIQUE EMBASSY IN MALAWI
24th February 2020
The Mozambique High Commission
I write to express an empirical observation that I have been monitoring for so long whenever I travel on the road between Malawi and South Africa using Calomue, Zobue – Cuchamano route. It has become disappointing to note that Malawians travelling on this route are harassed and subjected to unfair treatment by the immigration staff and those that guard the frontier.
Whenever Malawians are travelling to South Africa on this route they are forced to:
- Pay R50.00 on the port of entry or exit whenever they are using a new passport.
- Pay R50.00 whenever they are traveling with a passport that is seemingly having slight problem.
- Pay 50.00 whenever their passport has no endorsement of R3,000.00 money which this individual would use as he/she travels to South Africa.
- Are accused of travelling with fake bank forex procurement receipts yet their receipts are genuine but being pushed to be extorted R50.00 or above.
Your Excellency I write as an individual who has been experiencing the same and call upon your office to intervene and bring this to stop. I believe that the conduct of these immigration officers is contrary to the expected normal conduct and a departure from professional conduct of immigration procedures.
I believe that SADC member states countries within the region have an obligation to ensure that they allow citizens within the region have easy access to travel however within the parameters of the laws of their countries.
It is however very unfortunate that migration officer on this route always aim at reaping off Malawians traveling on this route more especially though traveling on busses. I wonder if this is the position of Mozambique Government, or is the misconduct of these officers.
Looking forward to your assistance to ensure that people are given the much needed assistance on the route with less hustle as this behaviour continue to dent Mozambique as a hostile country.
