The 2020 Tobacco Marketing season has so far registered higher prices as compared to last year.
Speaking to the media during a Media Interface at the Tobacco Commission Head office in Lilongwe, TC Chief Executive Officer Kayisi Sadala said so far, the four week period has seen prices going higher with 13% as compared to last year over the same period.
Sadala further observed that volumes at the market have gone down with 19% and attributed to low volumes of the leaf delivered at the market.
On rejection rates that went slightly higher as compared to last year the same period, the TC top man mentioned two reasons namely; low competition on the market as some buying companies were not participating at the Auction due to other reasons including Covid-19 related restrictions.
Secondly he indicated poor and mixed grading as another problem. He however expressed delight as the situation is now improving.
